Tips to Preventing Split Ends

By AlnwickKajetan at 2010-08-25 02:23:33
Split ends are one of the most common complaints that hairdressers hear with almost every person reporting some level of split ends affecting their hair. Split ends, known as also as trichoptlosis, is basically when the hair cuticles become damaged and the hair literally begins to unravel around the cortex or inner section of the hair strand.

Having your hair cut every 6 weeks helps to maintain your overall hair condition. Hair grows about a half inch each month. To maintain healthy hair growth, massage the scalp regularly. This will stimulate the flow of nutrients, oxygen and blood to the hair follicles. Men pay particular attention to those bald spot areas.

It is important to know that once a person has Trichoptlosis there is no way to restore hair back to its original structure. So, it would be necessary to trim the split ends. However, what you do after the trimming may determine if your hair will grow healthy or look dull. Here are some tips that can help prevent split ends:

Use a wide toothed comb for wet hairs. Wet hairs are more delicate and may break easily with a hair brush. Use hair combs made up of natural bruises; however such accessories are quite expensive. If these are not affordable use synthetic products with rounded tips. Those with pointed teeth are harsh to scalp and cause more hair breakage.

Use a conditioner according to your hair type at least once a week. It is seen that almost every hair type requires conditioner at least to some extent.

Mind how you accessorize. When you buy hair accessories make sure they are made from soft plastic as hard plastic will damage your hair, old and damaged hair accessories are a major cause of split ends. Also make sure hair bands are covered in a soft material and avoid using elastic bands.

Don't over condition. Try not to over wash or condition your hair. If you do this you are preventing your body from releasing natural oils that help to moisturize your hair. Dehydration is a major cause of split ends.

There are many herbal treatments for hair split ends; however, the application of volcanic ash (multani matti) paste is considered to be the best for hair split ends. All you need to do is make a paste of volcanic ash with water and apply it to your hair. Similarly Indian gooseberry (amla) is also a very good herbal treatment for split ends and so is yogurt or curd.

If your hair is often exposed to harsh chemical treatments (such as coloring, relaxing or rebonding), it looses moisture easily, making it prone to breakage. Make it a point to relax your hair in between treatments. Wait at least a month or so after, before you undergo another treatment. Another tip: don't color and relax your hair at the same time.

The best way to conquer split ends is to prevent them from occurring in the first place! However, this is also the hardest thing to implement. You'll need to limit your use of heat styling tools and protect your hair from elements such as wind and sun as well as poor hair accessories. Keep your hair from becoming dry.
