Causes of Female Hair Loss

By AlnwickKajetan at 2010-08-25 06:59:32
Hair is a person's crowning glory especially for the female population, which directly links the sense of beauty to hair. Thus, it is a nightmare for any woman to wake up each day and realize that they are losing significant strands of hair.

While this condition may not be as prevalent as the male version, it certainly demonstrates a problem today. The loss of hair can have profound effects, as psychologically stressful hair loss is for men, studies have shown the psychological impact on women can be greater. Women tend to put a stronger psychological value on their appearance and thinning hair, as they regard it as an attack on their appearance.

Anxiety/Stress: Consistently high anxiety levels cause the body to divert blood flow from the scalp to other areas it deems more important. This natural process can take a toll on hair growth. The good news is that this condition is temporary, and will dissipate once the cause disappears, is managed, or eliminated.

Salon Treatments

Perms, hot oil treatments and hair relaxers may cause inflammation and irritation of the scalp. Just like with tight hair styles, if the body feels that your scalp is under threat from infections and damage, it will shut down and leave you hairless in certain areas of your scalp.

Therefore, most women who are post- menopause will see a difference in their hair as it becomes thinner. However, there are some women who are pre-menopause and are still experiencing hair loss. This cause of female hair loss can be put down to the birth control pill. This pill contains estrogen and as mentioned previously is a contributor to hair loss.

Telogen Effluvium is what happens when you have gone through some trauma including child birth, serious injury, surgery, malnutrition, or extreme stress. Close to 90% of hairs that are in the Anagen (growth) or the resting stage which some call the Catagen stage can switch over to Telogen Effluvium. If severe stresses can be avoided this hair loss can go into remission.

Androgenetic alopecia affects approximately 2 out of very 10 women and is driven by an androgen hormone called dihydrotestosterone. Over time those genetically susceptible to the condition will experience a build up in DHT in the hair follicle which leads to a number of problems.

Wading through all of the products for women's hair can be a challenge at the best of times, but finding a product that works to stop female pattern baldness and re-grow the hair you have already lost can be a daunting task to say the least.

Some of the better treatments on the market include an oral supplement that contains biotin and PABA, as well as a topical solution containing 2% Minoxidil. Some women have seen results after just a few weeks of use.

So, while the cause of female hair loss may be unclear, the most effective treatments are well known. Nutrients, Minoxidil, proper care and a little patience are the keys.
