Conjunctivitis Treatment

By AlnwickKajetan at 2010-10-18 02:53:16
The common term frequently used for conjunctivitis is "pink eye." However, this term is only properly used to refer to conjunctivitis which is caused by a viral infection of the eye. What we will target here is allergic conjunctivitis, its causes, and some treatments.

Some of the important symptoms of conjunctivitis are the inflammation of the eyeball and underside of the eyelids. Initially the eyes are red and itchy but later on there may be a watery secretion. In many cases this condition becomes serious and there is a formation of pus, which while sleeping dries up and makes the lashes sticky together.

In order to prevent conjunctivitis, it is essential to wash your hands and face frequently with Johnson's Baby Shampoo and plenty of warm water. Use single disposable towels or cloths to cleanse the face and eye area. Do not reuse a towel, rag, or cloth that you have already used

Redness in the eye is not definitely the pink eye problem. If you have sat up late in the night or have not slept well, it also happens. In this case, your eyes will get back to where they were after taking a good rest. However, if you have made sure that it is pink eye, then immediate treatment is required. But the treatment will vary from case to case according to the variant causes.

Another common type is bacterial conjunctivitis. The symptoms associated with this bacterial infection include: heavy discharge that usually accumulates during sleep, discharge that is yellow or green in color, soreness and sensitivity in the eye area, and lots of redness in white of your eye.

The exact type of eye drop will depend on whether it is caused by an irritant, allergy, or an infection caused viral or bacterial culprit. Your health care provider will help you make the best choice for prescription drops and occasionally an oral medication as well.

Mixing a poultice of grated apple or grated raw red potato and placing this mix on the closed eye. Let the mixture stay in place for a half hour, and within two or three days, the disease should completely clear up.

For pink eye caused by bacteria, the major symptoms include eye watering and the accumulation of thick crust in the corners of the eye. Antibiotic eye drops or ointment will work fine in this case. The eyes can proceed with their normal activities within one day or two.

Zinc is an important cofactor for vitamin A. When there is a zinc deficiency, the immune system does not produce as many white blood cells to fight infection, and the "clean-up" of damaged tissues in the conjunctiva of the eye is slowed.

Doctors don't usually prescribe medication for Pink Eye, because it usually goes away on it's own within a few days. You must take some precauctions though with family members since Pink Eye can very easily spread to others. Wash your hands often and and don't touch or rub your eyes. Don't share washcloths, towels or other linens with others, and wash items after each use.

For bacterial forms of conjunctivitis, antibiotics in the form of eye drops or ointment are the best treatment. This usually acts quickly to kill the bacteria that is causing pink eye, and you can usually resume your normal day-to-day activities after 24 hours of treatment.
