Symptoms and Treatment for Eating Disorder

By AlnwickKajetan at 2010-11-17 03:39:23
The number of people suffering from eating disorders in recent years has been increasing. Although many people believe that these problems are something that only young girls or women have to deal with they are sadly mistaken. Below we provide some general info about eating disorders and which will show that all manner of people can suffer from them.

People with anorexia will go hungry for perfection. They believe they are overweight, or have the fear of becoming obese. Eating disorder, which is also known as Anorexia is common in the adolescence and early puberty. An individual with anorexia can develop unusual eating habits, and most of them will refuse to eat in front of others, or serve large meals for others and not eat any of that.

Physical symptoms resemble the symptoms of any overweight or obese person. Binge eaters have a tendency to put on weight and are likely to suffer from many of the health conditions associated with being overweight, including diabetes, high blood pressure, high levels of cholesterol, heart problems, osteoarthritis, kidney problems and irregular periods.

One such eating disorder is anorexia. Individuals with anorexia starve themselves to obtain perfection. They believe that they are overweight, or have the fear of becoming obese, no matter what the actual weight and body size. Anorexia is commonly seen in adolescence and the onset of puberty. A person with anorexia may develop strange eating habits, such as refusal to eat in front of others, or serving large meals for others and not eating any of it.

Binging is usually done as a result of some sort of emotional problem such as stress, loneliness, anger, and so on. This is why binge eating is in fact emotional eating.

Binge eaters aren't happy with what they're doing. They have a food addiction and they are extremely unhappy with it. Usually, they feel much worse emotionally after they binge than they do before.

Compulsive overeating - Overeating or addiction of over eating is called compulsive overeating. People suffering from their abnormal eating, feels uncomfortable in society. Compulsive Overeater is at risk for a heart attack, high blood-pressure and cholesterol, kidney disease and/or failure, arthritis and bone deterioration, and stroke.

Both bulimia and anorexia are commonly found among the girls rather than boys. The cause of bulimia, like anorexia, is not known. Only seven percentage of people suffering from either of these eating disorders is seeking medical treatment or consult the physician. Apart from medication counseling is the best way of treating eating disorders. Eating disorder patient needs total family care and affection.

Symptoms of eating disorders can be found in people of all ages. Even children can succumb to an eating disorder. As a parent, be alert to any changes in your child's eating patterns. This is especially important for school age girls. There is so much media coverage concerning appearance and slimness that it can affect young persons self esteem.

Choose Eating Disorder Treatment Centre: You may also need to consider entering a treatment centre if it is impacting on your physical and mental health. The support system plays a major role in assisting your recovery.

While there is no universal recommendation for treatment in adolescents, typically an adolescent will start in an outpatient treatment option with regular medical and mental health visits. If necessary, the adolescent will then proceed to more intensive treatment, but the key is that you not force them into something without gradually determining how they respond to less invasive help. Ultimately, treatment for eating disorders in adolescents should be as noninvasive as possible.
