If you are one of many people who suffer from nail fungus, you may be wondering how to treat it. The most common nail fungus affects the toenails. It is less likely to have the fungus in the fingernails but they are both treated in the same way.

Tea tree oil is a known anti-septic. It is one of the best remedies and has been used by thousands of people for many years. You can easily pick up a bottle of tree tea oil from a health shop. Apply a few drops to the affected area twice a day for two weeks for the best results.

In treating the infection the natural way, tea tree oil must be purchased at a health or natural foods store. The procedure involves using a clean gauze pad in applying the tea tree oil into the nail's surface and the surrounding area during bedtime daily. By use of a cotton swab, tea tree oil is applied on the tip of the nail everyday.

Keep your feet dry and use a clean towel to dry them completely after bathing and swimming. Avoid non-porous closed shoes made of synthetic material. Wear absorbent socks. Wear water-proof sandals when in public showers. Keep your nails short. Never lend or borrow a nail file, emery board, nail clippers etc. If you are visiting a salon for a manicure or pedicure it is important to be sure of the hygiene.

While you're treating your toenail fungus, avoid trimming them. When you trim your nails, you risk cutting your skin. Even a slight cut allows another entry point for the fungus to invade and this could mean even more infections. Simply allow them to grow normally and file with a fingernail file if they become too long or sharp in areas. This will help the plant oils treat the fungus more effectively.

Keep your toe nails short, the less protection you provide for the fungus the better. Practice good hygiene and take care of the basics so that you can treat this problem and prevent it form coming back in the future.
